  • Food & Beverage

  • Metal & Aluminum

  • Manufacturing

  • Retail

  • Window / Glass

  • Warehousing / Distribution Centers

  • Cold Storage

  • Transportation & Logistics

  • Produce

Warehousing Barcode Scanner Applications:

  • Receiving

  • Putaway

  • Picking

  • Packing

  • Shipping

  • Inventory Control

  • Cycle Counting

  • Manufacturing Work Orders

  • Asset Tracking

  • Quality Control

  • Returns Processing

Scanner choice depends on what you’re scanning, where you’re scanning it, and how often. A pharmacy counting pill bottles ten times an hour needs a different tool than a 3PL warehouse running 2,000 picks a shift. A receiving operation that scans long-range pallet labels from a forklift cab needs a different scanner than a fixed-station shipping desk. The wrong scanner doesn’t fail loudly — it just slows the operation down a fraction of a second per scan, every shift, forever.

Conti Systems has been deploying barcode scanners since 1993 — handheld, wireless, fixed-mount, and wearable, across every major brand. We pre-configure scanners for your environment before they ship: scan modes, host connection, suffix/prefix programming, beep and vibrate settings. We match scanners to your existing fleet so triggers and configuration stay consistent. And we repair what we sell, with fleet repair programs for warehouses running 25 or more units. See our Mobile Computers lineup of products.

HARDWARE

Types of Barcode Scanners

Handheld corded scanners

USB or serial connection. Lowest cost. Best for point-of-sale, shipping stations, and fixed workstations where the scanner doesn’t need to travel. Example of models include Zebra, Honeywell Voyager / Granit, Datalogic QuickScan.

Wireless handheld scanners

Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, portable, used at receiving, pick-and-pack, and cycle counts. Battery-powered with charging cradles. Example models: Zebra, Honeywell Xenon XP cordless, Datalogic PowerScan.

Fixed-mount and presentation scanners

Mounted in a fixed position; items pass through the read zone. Best for high-volume scanning lanes, kiosks, and conveyor applications. Example models: Zebra FS series, Honeywell Stratos / Solaris.

Wearable scanners

Ring scanners and wrist-worn devices for hands-free order picking. Best for high-throughput fulfillment, put-walls, and fast-pick zones. Example models: Zebra, ProGlove MARK.

Industrial / rugged scanners

Drop-rated, IP-rated for dust and water, operating temperature extremes. Best for manufacturing, cold storage, outdoor, and harsh environments. Example models: Zebra, Honeywell Granit XP.

TECHNOLOGY

1D vs. 2D vs. Imaging

Which Type Do You Need? One of the most common scanner-choice mistakes is over-buying or under-buying on read technology. Quick framework:

Box Icon

1D laser scanners
Read traditional linear barcodes (UPC, Code 128). Lowest cost. Limitation: doesn’t read 2D codes or damaged barcodes well.
Equipment Repair

2D area imagers
Read both 1D and 2D codes (QR, Data Matrix). Slightly higher cost. Reads damaged barcodes and codes on screens. The default choice for most warehouse applications today.
Equipment Repair

Long-range imagers
Read at extended distances (15–50+ ft). Required for forklift scanning of overhead aisle signs and long-distance rack labels. Higher cost.

When in doubt: 2D area imager. It reads everything 1D scanners read, plus future-proofs for QR codes, marketplace labels, and any 2D application that lands on your dock next year.

SERVICES

How to Choose the Right Barcode Scanner

STEP 01

What are you scanning?

1D barcodes only, 2D codes (QR, Data Matrix), both, damaged labels, codes on screens? Different read technology fits different jobs.

STEP 02

Where are you scanning it?

Fixed workstation, mobile picking, vehicle-mounted, harsh environment? The form factor and ruggedization spec depend on the use environment.

STEP 03

Scan volume per shift

Low volume points to handheld corded. High-throughput picking points to wireless or wearable. Volume affects trigger durability and battery requirements.

STEP 04

Integration

USB-HID, USB-COM, Bluetooth profile, Wi-Fi, batch upload, host system compatibility. The scanner has to talk to your WMS or POS the way it expects.

VERSATILITY

Industries We Serve

Conti supplies barcode scanners to 3PL and logistics operations, manufacturing plants, e-commerce fulfillment centers, cold storage warehouses, and distribution centers. Each industry stresses scanners differently — 3PL runs continuous-duty triggers, cold storage murders batteries, manufacturing exposes triggers to chemicals — and we spec accordingly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the lead time on barcode scanners?2026-06-02T12:31:24-06:00

In-stock scanners ship same day or next business day. Pre-configured units typically 2–4 business days depending on configuration complexity. Larger fleet rollouts are scheduled to your operational calendar so deployment happens in waves rather than all at once.

Do you offer fleet programs for scanner purchases?2026-06-02T12:31:00-06:00

Yes — volume pricing, staggered rotation, and consistent configuration across multi-site deployments. Multi-site fleets benefit from a single account managing equipment, configuration, repair, and lifecycle in one chain.

Can you repair the scanners you sell?2026-06-02T12:30:41-06:00

Yes — see our scanner repair page. Fleet repair programs are available for warehouses with 25 or more units in deployment, with staggered rotation so the warehouse never goes dark waiting on repairs.

Do you offer wearable scanners for fast-pick?2026-06-02T12:30:19-06:00

Yes — ring scanners and arm-worn or wrist-worn devices for hands-free picking. Most common in high-throughput e-commerce fulfillment and goods-to-person operations where pick rate is the critical metric.

Can scanners read damaged or wrinkled barcodes?2026-06-02T12:29:59-06:00

2D area imagers do this much better than 1D laser scanners. For environments where labels see damage — manufacturing, returns processing, abrasive handling — 2D is essential. 1D lasers will fail on damaged codes that 2D imagers read on the first try.

Can you pre-configure scanners before shipment?2026-06-02T12:29:39-06:00

Yes — scan modes, host connection (USB-HID, USB-COM, Bluetooth profile), beep and vibrate settings, suffix and prefix programming all configured before the box ships. Devices arrive ready to scan into your existing host system.

Do you sell Honeywell barcode scanners?2026-06-02T12:29:17-06:00

Yes — Voyager, Granit, Xenon, Captuvo, and former Intermec / Hand Held Products models that Honeywell absorbed. Common in 3PL operations and manufacturing.

Which Zebra scanner is right for my warehouse?2026-06-02T12:28:59-06:00

Depends on the application. DS series for general retail and light industrial. LI series for legacy 1D-only environments. DS3608 for rugged warehouse use. RS series ring scanners for high-throughput wearable picking. We’ll spec to your workflow rather than recommend a default.

Should I buy wired or wireless scanners?2026-06-02T12:28:37-06:00

Wired scanners are lower cost and right for fixed workstations — shipping desks, checkouts, kiosks. Wireless scanners are right for portability — receiving, picking, cycle counts, anywhere the scanner has to move with the worker. Most warehouses end up with a mix.

What’s the difference between 1D and 2D barcode scanners?2026-06-02T12:28:12-06:00

1D laser scanners read linear barcodes only (UPC, Code 128, Code 39). 2D area imagers read both 1D and 2D codes (QR, Data Matrix). 2D is the default choice today because it reads everything 1D does plus future-proofs for QR codes and 2D applications that show up later.
