1D laser scanners read linear barcodes only (UPC, Code 128, Code 39). 2D area imagers read both 1D and 2D codes (QR, Data Matrix). 2D is the default choice today because it reads everything 1D does plus future-proofs for QR codes and 2D applications that show up later.
